5 Things I learnt at The Marketing Profs B2B Forum

Last month I attended the Marketing Profs B2B Forum. It was an intense full two days of discussions on the strategy and tactics for business to business marketing. This is the first time since this event that I've had a chance to put down some thoughts. So now, after several weeks of knowledge absorption, here are my thoughts.

You can check out what the forum was about here:

or check the call sign #mpb2b on twitter.

5 Things I learnt from my dad.

Today the Pocono Record recognized my dad for his service to our country this memorial day. You can read the article here.

My dad taught me so much over the years. Here are just 5 of them.

1) There is always another angle. (Another way to look at things).
2) This is a wonderful country we live in and it is our responsibility to protect and nurture it.
3) Work hard.

5 Things about Public Relations

5 Things about Public Relations

1) PR is about Story Telling
Think about the times when someone told you a story. Now think about those times when the story teller grabbed your imagination?  What were those stories about?  It is my bet that those stories weren't about the person speaking but about something else. The person who always talks about themselves are typically labeled as "bores" and unless they are one of the few living legends, the story is not interesting. In B2B, these stories are about the industry, possibilities, innovations, problems, concerns and opportunities. Stories ...

If selling hamburgers were a B to B exercise, a short story.

I originally published this short story Jan 5, 2007 on my old blog. I've been thinking about this scenario lately and still think it is true today so instead of another Five Things In Marketing, here is a short story about hamburgers.

If selling hamburgers were a Business to Business exercise, the sales scenario might look like the following:

There are two teams in the engineering community. One likes ...

USS Abraham Lincoln One Year Later

Going off subject for a moment. On my photography blog I just posted this article which I thought would be interesting to the readers of this blog. It is about my stay upon the USS Abraham Lincoln.

More about that trip can be read here.

It has been one year since my 24 hour stay upon the USS Abraham Lincoln. I've been reflecting on this fact for a few weeks and decided that it might be interesting to check in with ... << MORE >>

5 Ways to Leave your Employer

Paul Simon once sang about the 50 ways to leave your lover. In the last few weeks, I've been thinking about the 5 way to leave your employer. So here they are:

1) Leave with your head held high

Take the high ground on how you discuss your departure. Focus on the positive. You are leaving friends behind who will continue to do their job next week, don't act like a jerk spending your final days complaining.

5 Things about Sales Enablement

5 Things about Sales Enablement

I find it interesting that many marketers have difficulty understanding how to enable their sales people. Sales enabement has become another buzz term and in many cases has become the definition of the infrastructure rather than the solution to meeting the needs of the sales person. And that solution is to make it easy for them to sell the products. So here are 5 thoughts about Sales Enablement.

1) Understand the Buying Process

You must understand ... << MORE >>

5 Things that Marketing is not

5 Things that Marketing is not

As a corollary to my previous post, here are 5 things that Marketing is not.

1) Not the liars club
Spin doctoring is not the role of marketing. Good marketing in the B to B space is about putting your best foot forward but is never about bending the truth to such a point it isn’t. I’ve heard this several times in my career “hey this is marketing don’t let the truth get in ... << MORE >>

5 Things That Marketing Is

Here are Five things that marketing is:

1) Marketing is strategic and tactical

Marketing is all about setting strategy but it is also all about executing on that strategy. I sometimes see marketers getting stuck in strategic paralysis. Many times they insist on creating the complete, perfect strategy. There isn't one. The better approach is to come up with your best guess hypothesis of a strategy. Cross some of the T's and dot some of the I's but don't wait too long, the market is moving too fact. So set your hypothesis, ...
